On March 19, Colleen Wagner gave a hands-on acrylics landscape workshop to five MOSI members. Colleen led us through her steps of building a finished landscape on canvas using acrylic paints. She discussed the qualities of good design.
Colleen basically uses three steps in her painting process:
- She begins with a base coat of umbers and ochres to define the dark and light areas
- She then paints the sky upside down, with the darkest of blues at the bottom (the actual top), as the sky is lighter at the horizon, and it is easier to paint it in this way
- Finally, the details of the landscape can be painted in final colors, from the background to the foreground
Colleen’s three-step process shown on the chairs.
Progress on Colleen’s class example.
Joanna Marshall is about to try a new-to-her brand of acrylic.
Betty McLane-Iles reviews her progress.
Judy Harris ponders acrylics vs oils.
Judy Sharp adds a bit of detail.
Willadean Walker examines her painting.
And the class’s finished (or almost finished) work looked like this:
A good time was had by all.
