Carla Palermo devised a winning recipe for these “Regal Roosters,” earning her status as the November 2014 Celebrated Artist by fellow Missouri-Southern Iowa Art Guild (MOSI) members.
She painted her background reds with acrylics, and used water-soluble oils for the roosters. Lately, Palermo has been experimenting with water-soluble oils rather than traditional oil paints, as they pose fewer health risks from breathing vapors, and make clean-up simpler for the artist.
Next spring, she and her husband plan to acquire some chickens of their own, which should provide some material for future painting. Palermo sells some of her work, and has been active in the local art community. Recently, she participated in an event in Marceline where artists were challenged to interpret local fixtures of the town. She painted a guitar for a radio station, as well as the museum in town. Palermo plans to display more of her work at future MOSI and regional art shows. “Regal Roosters” will be featured in the window of the Kirksville Arts Association at 117 S. Franklin Street, Kirksville, until early January.
Work of several MOSI members is currently on display at Jazzman’s, the coffee café at Pickler Library at Truman State University, and will remain until December 15. For more information on upcoming events or membership in MOSI, contact Colleen Wagner at [email protected].
